HDMI基于DVI（ Digital Visual Interface）制定，適合在數(shù)碼電視、DV播放機、機頂盒以及其他數(shù)碼視聽產(chǎn)品中使用。在保持高品質的情況下能夠以數(shù)碼形式傳輸未經(jīng)壓縮的高解析度視頻和多聲道音頻資料。最高資料傳輸速度為5Gbps。由于在該規(guī)格中將音頻和視頻信號均載入到一根電纜線上，因此不像現(xiàn)有類比方式的視聽纜線那樣需要拉多條線。HDMI中采用了適合在數(shù)碼可攜式攝像機上使用的小型介面。另外，還支援家電產(chǎn)品業(yè)內團體 Consumer Electronics Association（CEA）的標準規(guī)格EIA CEA-861x。
